Operating Departments

Anatomic Pathology Department (64010)

- Surgical Pathology
More than 20,000 surgical cases are received, processed, and reported annually. The average turnaround time for routine cases is one day with a 15-minute report time on frozen sections. A multitude of immunohistochemical markers and stains are performed in-house with diagnostic Electron Microscopy available through facilities at the OSU Medical School.

- Immunohistochemistry
Over 100 monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies are available in the immunochemistry laboratory, including a number of reagents, which are directed against infectious agents (i.e., Cytomegalovirus, Pneumocystis carninii, and Helicobacter pylori). In addition, surface markers for CD antigens are available to use on fresh frozen tissue or smears to complement the Flow Cytometry laboratory. Immunofluorescence microscopy is used routinely to evaluate immunoglobin and complement deposits in renal and skin biopsies. Enzyme studies are performed in conjunction with muscle biopsy evaluation.

- Cytology
Cytopathology provides both inpatient and outpatient services for non-gynecological cytology. Procedures are available for body fluid evaluation, bronchial brushings and washings, and fine needle aspiration of the thyroid and breast.

Support Service Department (64020)
The support service area of the laboratory is responsible for blood specimen collection throughout the hospital and in outpatient draw stations. Phlebotomists drawing specimens from pediatric patients receive advanced training in pediatric procedures and techniques. Clerical staff enters outpatient laboratory orders in the information system and responds to customer service inquiries. They also compile data for accurate admission and billing of hospital outpatients and clients. LIS staff maintains the laboratory database in Ulticare and is responsible for Informedics in the transfusion service. They also provide hardware support throughout the department.

School of Medical Technology (64030)
The Saint Francis Hospital School of Medical Technology, established in 1964, is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The program provides clinical education for students seeking a baccalaureate degree in laboratory medicine. The program has graduated 250 students with over 50 percent employed at Saint Francis Hospital. Graduates of the program routinely place in the top 15 to 25 percent nationwide on the ASCP certification examination. The program currently accepts six to eight students annually from seven state universities.

Immunology Department (64040)

- Immunology
The immunology section performs quantitative analyses of most antibodies (including hepatitis and HIV), tumor makers, and infectious agents.

- Flow Cytometry
Flow cytometry currently provides Immunophenotyping, T-cell subsets, and DNA Ploidy studies.

- Histocompatibility
The Histocompatibility Laboratory is certified by and participates in both the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). HLA provides molecular typing and histocompatibility testing for solid organ transplantation. This service supports the heart, kidney and stem cell transplant programs at Saint Francis Hospital, as well as, the renal transplant program at St. John Medical Center.

Point-of-Care Testing and Ancillary Laboratory Department (64050)
The Laboratory oversees the Point of Care (POC) testing program throughout the hospital. Waived testing, as defined by CLIA, is under the direction and certificate of Patient Care Services. Non-waived testing is under the direction and accreditation of the Laboratory. The Laboratory is consulted when new POC tests or sites are evaluated; selection of equipment is a joint responsibility. Blood gas/electrolyte equipment maintained by the laboratory is available in all critical units. Oversight of testing performed at off-site locations and laboratories is conducted by this department.

Chemistry Department (64060)
The general chemistry section provides the range of tests offered in most large facilities, including quantitative proteins. The toxicology subsection provides therapeutic drug monitoring and qualitative screening for all commonly abused legal and illegal drugs. Troponin I levels for immediate evaluation of chest pain patients are performed according to established cardiology criteria. The laboratory also supports numerous research and experimental drug protocols.

Microbiology Department (64070)
Microbiology utilizes numerous rapid detection systems in order to provide turnaround time of 24-36 hours for the identification of many organisms. DNA probes are used to enhance performance for selected organisms. Testing is offered in all specialties: Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Mycobacteriology, and Virology.

Transfusion Service Department (64080)
The laboratory operates a comprehensive Transfusion Service. It is staffed 24 hours a day by ASCP certified medical technologists, including two with specialty certification in Blood Bank. The director of the Transfusion Service is board certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology with a subspecialty in Immunohematology.

The Transfusion Service processes and transfuses over 20,000 components a year. The cross match to transfusion (C:T) ratio for Saint Francis Hospital is 1.2:1. Blood products are supplied by the Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI). The hospital maintains an inventory of at least 100 units with a 30-minute response time from OBI. In addition, the Transfusion Service provides storage and reinfusion support for the Autologous Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood Progenitor Cell Harvest and Transplantation Programs.

Hematology Department (64090)
Hematology performs routine hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and bone marrow tests. Special coagulation studies and factor assays are conducted to fully evaluate bleeding disorders. PTT testing for patients on weight-based heparin therapy protocols is closely coordinated with nursing personnel for rapid response.

Genetics Department (64110)
The Center for Genetic Testing is a comprehensive genetics laboratory that integrates state of the art genetic diagnostic testing for physicians, patients, and their families in Oklahoma, nationwide, and worldwide. Testing includes cytogenetic, FISH and molecular procedures, specializing in genetic testing for the diagnosis of congenital and inherited diseases.

- Cytogenetics and FISH
Tests are performed on blood, skin, amniotic fluid, and bone marrow cells to diagnose chromosome abnormalities. These abnormalities are responsible for genetic disorders such as Down syndrome, growth and developmental disorders, and multiple miscarriages. Bone marrow analysis helps in the classification and management of hematologic disorders. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is available for microdeletion disorders such as Prader-Willi, Angelman, DiGeorge/velocardiofacial, and Williams syndromes as well as for prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal aneuploidies and for some hematological malignancies.

- Molecular Genetics
This laboratory performs testing ranging in complexity from single mutation analysis to sequencing of entire genes. The laboratory offers testing for more than 40 diseases, including many that are very rare or for which testing options are limited. Areas of special interest include Marfan syndrome testing, PKD2 analysis, DNA sequencing for Rett syndrome, McCune-Albright syndrome testing, and tests for hereditary hearing loss. Prenatal samples are accepted for most tests and many tests may be performed with cheek swabs rather than blood samples.
